SUSTAINABILITY

Mahika Paper was created out of a need for more sustainably focused businesses. The stationary industry is infamous for its high amounts of plastic waste and contribution to deforestation which overall is expediting the worlds climate crisis. Upon starting this company, we were diligent in finding and working with partners that will support us in practicing what we preach.
Sustainable products do not have to look boring, brown, and/or bare. It is important for us to show off our bold, colorful personality while planting seeds in an industry that has been around for centuries.

Outlined below are our sustainable practices:

Bamboo Paper: All of our journals are produced with bamboo paper. We chose bamboo over traditional paper made from trees due to its fast growth rate and because the carbon footprint produced is smaller than utilizing wood pulp from trees. Bamboo is a great renewable resource due to the minimal amount of waste created when producing bamboo products. Bamboo paper also helps reduce the environmental effects of clear-cutting and deforestation on our planet.

More Fun Facts:

  • Bamboo grows up to 3ft per day
  • Bamboo can be harvested every 3-5 years
  • Bamboo yields 20x more timber per hectare than trees

Recycled Materials: Our journals are made from Eska®board, the gold standard in solid board construction. Eska®board is made from 100% recycled raw materials and has one of the smallest carbon footprints due to its innovative production process. Eska®board utilizes a gasification plant to to generate their own energy. through material that has been sorted from recycled paper that have been rejected and gets turned into steam. Eska®board also comes with a clear promise which is to lay flat and stay flat for ease when writing all of your entries, lists, notes, and more.

Soy-Based Ink: Our journal are printed with soy-based ink. It is the most environmentally friendly compared to other ink bases and it produces more accurate colors during production. Soy is easier to recycle and unlike lead, soy-based ink is biodegradable and renewable. Soy-based ink is made from soybeans which are 100% renewable and can be grown and replenished indefinitely.

Trees for the Future: Our printing partners have been a Trees for the Future sponsor since 2019. They have been planting 10,000 trees every year in some of the world’s poorest communities. Trees for the Future works to end hunger and poverty for small holder farmers through revitalizing degraded lands. Trees for the Future's work in agroforestry meets nine out of seventeen of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. They are a UN World Restoration Flagship and are recognized as one of the best large-scale ecosystem restoration efforts on the planet. The prestigious Flagship award is part of an effort by the UN to ensure that measurable progress is made on the UN’s environmental goals by 2030. More information about Trees for the Future can be found at trees.org

Plastic-Free Packaging: We prioritize plastic-free packaging so that you feel completely satisfied with your purchase and your environmental impact. Each journal is wrapped in tissue paper made from 100% post industrial recycled fibers and branded with a custom biodegradable sticker made from sugarcane byproduct. The package includes a 100% recycled 'Thank You' card that is compostable and is shipped in recyclable cardboard, and sealed with water activated tape. Water activated tape does not have any plastic residue in comparison to tradition tape. Usually a sponge or damp towel is used to wet the "sticky" side which allows the tape to stick nicely to cardboard.

Eco-Friendly Stickers: All stickers sold are designed by Mahika Paper and are printed on matte white, compostable, splash proof paper derived from sugarcane byproduct. Each sticker is printed with certified compostable and vegan inks with plastic-free liner. These biodegradable-paper stickers have a matte finish that comes from the texture of the paper material.
